Aprobada una nueva definición de museo: ICOM. ICOM approves a new museum definition

 El pasado 24 de agosto, en la Asamblea General Extraordinaria celebrada en el marco de la 26ª Conferencia General de ICOM, que tuvo lugar en Praga (República Checa), se aprobó la nueva definición de museo con una amplia mayoría. En total, se contabilizaron 487 votos a favor del texto (el 92’41% del total de votos emitidos) frente a 23 en contra y 17 abstenciones. La definición aceptada afirma que,

«Un museo es una institución permanente sin ánimo de lucro al servicio de la sociedad que investiga, colecciona, conserva, interpreta y expone el patrimonio material e inmaterial. Abiertos al público, accesibles e inclusivos, los museos fomentan la diversidad y la sostenibilidad. Funcionan y se comunican de forma ética, profesional y con la participación de las comunidades ofreciendo experiencias variadas para la educación, el disfrute, la reflexión y el intercambio de conocimientos».

La nueva redacción ha sido el resultado de intensos meses de trabajo, que han implicado a más 136 comités, entre ellos el español, comprometido desde el principio en este largo proceso.

 

 

ICOM is pleased to announce that the proposal for the new museum definition was approved.

On August 24th, in the framework of the 26th ICOM General Conference held in Prague, the ICOM Extraordinary General Assembly approved a new museum definition. The vote is the culmination of an 18-month participatory process that involved hundreds of museum professionals from 126 National Committees from all over the world. The new text reads:

“A museum is a not-for-profit, permanent institution in the service of society that researches, collects, conserves, interprets and exhibits tangible and intangible heritage. Open to the public, accessible and inclusive, museums foster diversity and sustainability. They operate and communicate ethically, professionally and with the participation of communities, offering varied experiences for education, enjoyment, reflection and knowledge sharing.”

This new definition is aligned with some of the major changes in the role of museums, recognising the importance of inclusivity, community participation and sustainability
