Richard Morris Hunt. His archive at the Library of Congress. Collector of architectural photography.. Albert Levy photograps in the collection .

Richard Morris Hunt, considered the greatest American architect of the 19th century, created an important archive of his own work that includes numerous photographs, primarily architectural photos.
This archive is located in the Library of Congress.
In its photography section, the following stand out:
- Photos by Albert Levy
- Photos of Spain.
The fact that Albert Levy's archive contains photographs of buildings he designed, taken at the time of their construction, leads us to believe that they were commissioned directly by architect Richard M. Hunt to photographer Albert Levy. This would give us an idea of Levy's fame at the time. (See the photos of the William K. Vanderbilt residence in the PDF below.)
Hunt Collection
The Hunt Collection at the Library of Congress consists of more than 15,000 drawings, photographs, sketchbooks, scrapbooks, rare books, and three-dimensional objects collected and assembled by Richard Morris Hunt from the 1840s until his death in 1895. The collection also contains materials assembled by Hunt's widow, Catharine Clinton Howland Hunt, and by their oldest sons, Richard Howland and Joseph Howland Hunt. The collection's state of preservation and depth is exceptional.
It is important to note that the drawings, print materials, and three-dimensional objects owned by Richard Morris Hunt were categories of collection that Hunt believed should be in an architectural library and museum
The print, drawing, and three-dimensional items in the Hunt Collection at the Library of Congress that belonged to Richard Morris Hunt are largely what remain of Hunt’s museum in a public institution. His office drawings, photographs, sketchbooks, scrapbooks, books, and three-dimensional items are still together, educating the public as Richard and Catharine Hunt believed art and architecture could.
Richard Morris Hunt Research Guide
As was true for collections of nineteenth-century architects whose eclectic practices turned to contemporary and historic architecture, at home and abroad, for inspiration, the Hunt Collection includes thousands of photographs of new and old buildings, largely in Europe, of interiors and furnishings, sculpture, iron work, landscapes and city scenes. Many of these photographs were produced by pioneers in the medium, including Charles Marville, Édouard Baldus, James Anderson, and Alinari & Cook. Also included in the collection are images of Richard Morris Hunt's own work, some by Newport-based Frank H. Child, and prints from calotypes of the Middle East created by Leavitt Hunt on his pioneering tour in 1851-1852 with American Nathan Flint Baker.
