Fotografía. Batallón infantil. Fotógrafo Duarte. Children's battalion. #Asturias. #Spain.

In the market there are sometimes pictures of children or groups of children dressed as soldiers. Seldom, however, are photos of entire battalions. In this case the photo is made by Duarte, renowned photographer, who was active, first in Avilés, as in the case of this photo and later in Oviedo. On this subject it is possible to emphasize the excellent and ample study:
The infantile battalions in the Spanish physical education (1890-1931)Torrebadella Flix, Xavier [ORCID Identifier] (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona Departament de Didàctica de l'Expressió Musical, Plàstica i Corporal)

......... The first child battalion-school-that is known was the Hospicio de Madrid, constituted wanting to imitate the battalions that such good achievements were offering to France. The initiative was of the provincial deputy Mr. Gálvez Holguin, and gymnastic-military instruction was directed by the gymnastics teacher Marcelo Sanz. The battalion was composed of twelve hundred boys, between ten and twelve years old, who handled rifles of three and four kilos51. All the press in Madrid was glad of the initiative and asked that the example be imitated in other towns
........ The battalions received all the sympathies of the military hierarchies, of the conservative aristocracy symbolized by the powerful figure of King Alfonso XIII, and the complicity of the Catholic Church. The battalions were supported by a Catholic-national ideology whose objective was to strengthen a race of patriotic youth and Christian morality.Luis Miguel Lázaro attributes the main propagation of the school battalions to the educational system of Father Andrés Manjón in the Ave Maria schools created in Granada in 188958. In these outdoor schools, located in the Sacro Monte area, around 1895/6 Father Manjón organized a school battalion, whose disciples-poor sons of day laborers and of some gypsy families-were armed with wooden rifles, flags, drums and bugles. According to Lázaro, Manjón was the one who offered the ideological-pedagogical support to these organizations, which mainly emerged from the colonial disaster of 1898:

In the treatise Children's Games in the schools and colleges of Santos Hernández -father of the Society of Jesus-, the children's battalion was included as another game, which was said to be assiduous the practice organized by the gymnastics teachers in some of the schools:"Children's Battalion. We finished the paragraph mentioning this entertainment, one of the most enjoyable to all children. Your organization hardly offers difficulties. In some schools the gymnastics teachers organize these battalions with all perfection; in others they teach part or at least of the military exercise, enough so that they can easily be formed by choosing groups of more advantaged children.

Thus, the child battalions will be characterized both by their patriotic spirit and by developing certain practices of a paramilitary nature that place them within the current of regeneration and patriotic and nationalist exaltation so widespread since the second half of the 20th century. XIXThese organizations were fostered by various institutions and political, civil and religious entities. Special interest was shown by local corporations such as the Provincial Councils and the City Councils and its greatest expansion occurred in the first years of the s. XX. Possibly, as affirmed Ivone Turin, one of the causes more determinant of its proliferation was a response of the society before the disaster of 1898 and a regenerationist reactionThe central figure of the photo is a civilian next to the flag. It can be assumed, according to the texts that inform us about this topic, that it is the teacher of the class. There are more than 100 children, so it could be the director of the school or, even some figure of the town hall.
