Esta foto recoge un hecho típico en la España de las primeras décadas del siglo XX (hasta los años 60).
En la calle, delante de la casa del fallecido, antes de partir el coche fúnebre los asistentes se despedían de la familia-y del cura como se ve en la foto- dando el pésame.
La foto esta realizada por Alfonso García Portela hijo mayor de famoso fotógrafo Alfonso Sánchez García. Fue uno de los más famosos fotoperiodistas españoles, así como un gran retratista.

...........Alfonso Sánchez Portela (1902-1990) fue una de las más grandes
figuras de la fotografía del siglo XX. Formado en el estudio de su
padre, Alfonso Sánchez García, su cámara supo captar lo momentos más
importantes de la historia contemporánea española, como la Guerra de
Marruecos, la proclamación de la República o la Guerra Civil, y por su
estudio pasaron los personajes más influyentes de cada momento, desde
políticos hasta profesores, actores y artistas.
La exposición
refleja una de las facetas más interesantes del trabajo de Alfonso: su
relación con los escritores de la Edad de Plata, nombre con el que se
conoce el primer tercio del siglo XX español, en el que confluyeron las
generaciones del 98, del 14 y del 27...........

Existe un magnífico libro sobre la vida de su padre
"Alfonso 50 años de la Historia de España" de Publio López Mondéjar.
Con motivo del libro se realizó una exposición itinerante con fotos de Alfonso, asi en 2003 en el Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid

El archivo del estudio Alfonso fue adquirido por el Estado en 1992.

Alfonso, Luis y José Sánchez Portela.
Alfonso Sánchez García entra a formar parte de la plantilla del Estudio
del fotógrafo Manuel Compañy en 1987. Desde 1904 y hasta la apertura del
estudio en la calle Fuencarrar en 1910, Alfonso Sánchez García instala
su laboratorio en su vivienda en la calle Carretas. En esta época se
inicia en el reporterismo gráfico colaborando para distintos diarios y
publicaciones periódicas. En la década de los 20 sus hijos Alfonso y
Luis entran a formar parte de la plantilla del estudio de la calle
Fuencarral. En esta época Alfonso Sánchez Portela comienza también a
cubrir información gráfica para distintos periódicos. En 1935 se
inaugura el estudio de la calle Santa Engracia que, a partir de 1940,
regentará Luis Sánchez Portela.
Tras la destrucción del estudio de la calle Fuencarrar durante la Guerra
Civil, se inaugura en agosto de 1939 el estudio de la calle Gran Vía,
concebido no sólo como estudio de fotografía sino también como museo,
exponiéndose retratos de diferentes personalidades.
