..........Las Escuelas de Artesanos de Valencia fueron fundadas el 14 de octubre de 1868 por relevantes ciudadanos amantes del progreso social con el objetivo fundacional de “…dar o fomentar gratuitamente la enseñanza  práctica de las Artes y Oficios, y la instrucción moral e intelectual entre las clases obreras, a fin de que alcancen éstas el mayor grado posible de perfeccionamiento y educación en beneficio de su bienestar, por lo que ha venido ostentando el lema de moralizar instruyendo” (Estatutos de la Junta de las Escuelas de Artesanos de Valencia).

..........En el ámbito artístico ha sido igualmente brillante su labor, ya que los mejores artistas valencianos iniciaron en las Escuelas de Artesanos sus estudios, y cabe destacar a Joaquín Sorolla, José Segrelles, Cecilio Plá, Enrique García Carrilero, los hermanos Benedito, Santiago de Les, Amadeo Roca y muchos otros.

Edmond Bénard est un photographe qui n’est guère connu que pour ses photographies d’ateliers d’artistes. De 1884 à 1894 environ, il entreprit de photographier systématiquement les ateliers des artistes exposant au Salon : hommes, femmes, français et étrangers, peintres et sculpteurs. Ces vues étaient censées permettre au spectateur de faire irruption dans l’intimité de l’artiste. En vérité, elles se révèlent tout aussi fabriquées que l’art pratiqué par leurs modèles, artistes académiques pour la plupart.
En effet, chaque atelier a fait l’objet d’une série de photographies, généralement prises le même jour, au cours duquel le photographe a réagencé les lieux à sa guise, tirant ici un tapis, décrochant un tableau là, poussant les plantes vertes, manipulant l’artiste même, le plus souvent présent sur l’image, selon un catalogue de poses stéréotypées : tantôt il joue du piano, tantôt il feint de peindre un tableau achevé, lit le journal, converse avec un ami, est allongé sur un sofa... Le même scénario se répète d’atelier en atelier, et l’on s’étonne de la complaisance de ces artistes parfois célèbres, comme ici Falguière et Gervex, envers un personnage aussi mineur que l’était alors un photographe.
