Photography depends, functionally, on the physical state of its subject. A poet or painter can invent fictional structures in order to evoke architecture’s role as a conduit of ideas and values. Photographers do something else: they represent buildings—concrete objects, present in space and time before the camera.

A photograph is an image carved out of space and time; it is the
fingerprint of one location at a unique moment in history. The camera
translates fleeting circumstances into a persistent form. The photograph
proliferates and circulates; it is as multiple and itinerant as the
building is singular and fixed.
Portraying buildings from four millennia and five continents, the
photographs in this exhibition date from every decade of the medium’s
history, from the 1840s to the present. Five works in other media—a
painting, two drawings, a comic strip, and a sculpture—highlight, by
contrast, the time-bound character that the building and the photograph
share as modes of craft, as agents of history, and as features of
everyday life.
Una fotografía es una imagen tallada en el espacio y el tiempo, es la huella digital de un solo lugar en un momento único en la historia. La cámara traduce circunstancias fugaces en una forma persistente. La fotografía se repite y circula, es múltiple e itinerante mientra que el edificio es singular y fijo en un lugar.Retratando los edificios de cuatro milenios y cinco continentes, las fotografías de esta exposición pertenecen a cada década de la historia del medio, desde la década de 1840 hasta la presente.
Hay también cinco obras realizadas con otros medios artísticos : una pintura, dos dibujos, una tira cómica, y una escultura, que muestran, por contraste, el carácter ligado al tiempo que el edificio y la fotografía comparten como arte, como agentes de la historia, y como características de la vida cotidiana.

Un poeta o un pintor puede inventar estructuras de ficción para asi evocar el papel de la arquitectura como un conductor de ideas y valores. Los fotógrafos hacen otra cosa: representan edificios, un objeto determinado, presente en el espacio y el tiempo delante de la cámara.
