The Photography Incunabula Collection at the Getty Research Institute

Materials from the Research Library, Getty Research Institute located in Los Angeles, CA. The Photography Incunabula Collection at the Getty Research Institute includes books from the 1840’s through the 1870’s, which are illustrated primarily with salted paper prints or albumen print

These were the first photographic media viable for publication purposes yet the production of such books was very labor-intensive: the images were printed individually from paper or glass negatives and then mounted manually onto the pages. Together, the pioneers of photography and the publishers of these innovative books used the new medium to experiment aesthetically, to showcase photography’s various capabilities such as accuracy of detail, and to disseminate the ever-expanding frontiers of knowledge—both geographically and scientifically.
