Su formación inicial, en contacto con los integrantes de la
Sociedad Fotográfica de Madrid, fue pictorialista.

embargo, salvo algunas excepciones, esta estética que busca
conscientemente un distanciamiento de la realidad mediante el empleo de
técnicas complicadas, tanto en la preparación previa del motivo como en

obtuvo Medalla de Oro en la Exposición de París de 1867. Abrió galería
en el n.º 22 de la madrileña calle del Príncipe (se llamó también
Izquierdo), negocio que amplió con dos sucursales, una en la calle
Visitación, donde retrató a sus contemporáneos, principalmente artistas,
intelectuales y políticos, y otra en París en el n.º 50 de la rue
Faubourg Saint Denis. Con las fotos de los literatos elaboró álbumes con
textos, y en el año 1872 incluyó treinta y tres personajes populares,
entre ellos: Ramón de Campoamor, Manuel Fernández y González, Eugenio
