La
Habana, mediado el siglo XIX, contaba quince galerías fotográficas,
todas al final de las calles de Obispo y de O'Reilly. Destacaba el
estudio del norteamericano Samuel A. Cohner (creado en 1863 y con
sucursal en París), asesinado por los voluntarios de Cuba durante los
conflictos de 1869.
....Al año siguiente Cohner se asoció con los fotógrafos norteamericanos Winter y Charles D Fredricks y retrató a las principales figuras en el formato “carte de visite” ofertando álbumes para coleccionarlas. En la Gaceta de la Habana del 1ro de julio de 1860 anuncian la venta de retratos de ese tamaño del “Conde de San Antonio, el general Concha, el Ilustre Ayuntamiento, la Sra. Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, las Señoritas Inés y Fanny Nataly, Madame Garnier, etc.”
.........En 1862 Cohner decidió independizarse. Cerró la galería de Washington y viajó a Paris donde abrió una fotografía en la Rue Rivoli 59 para luego regresar a La Habana en el mes de noviembre de 1862 “al frente de una compañía de artistas eminentes de la pintura y la fotografía” con fotógrafos, modistos, retocadores, pintores y operarios franceses e inaugurar en la calle de O’Reilly nº. 62 (hoy 364), la “Galería Fotográfica de S.A. Cohner”, la más lujosa y moderna de la capital con amplios salones, los últimos equipos para retratar, cortinas, telones de fondo, mobiliarios, adornos y las técnicas fotográficas más modernas en boga en Europa y América.

El fotógrafo Samuel Alejandro Cohner había nacido en 1833 en Washington D.C., sus padres eran austriacos.
.. En 1851 él y su colega Julián Vannerson recorrieron el oeste norteamericano retratando a los indios en sus asentamientos y los paisajes de los alrededores, iniciando la llamada “época de oro de la fotografía del oeste norteamericano”. En 1856, cuando contaba con 23 años, abrió su propia galería en la Avenida Pennsylvania 808 en la misma capital y viajó a Francia para estudiar los procedimientos fotográficos más modernos.
.....Cohner, animado por el éxito de Disneri y sus pequeñas fotografías, adquirió cámaras, álbumes y otras novedades del formato carte de visite y partió a La Habana, ciudad que siempre le interesó por su tradicional acogida a los fotógrafos y la afición al arte de Daguerre. Se relacionó con el pintor alemán Oscar Held que tenia su estudio en la calle del Obispo nº 89 y allí abrieron una galería de retratos “Carte de Visite” con un éxito increíble.....Al año siguiente Cohner se asoció con los fotógrafos norteamericanos Winter y Charles D Fredricks y retrató a las principales figuras en el formato “carte de visite” ofertando álbumes para coleccionarlas. El primero de estos émulos de Daguerre que se afincó en esta céntrica vía resultó un fotógrafo de origen austriaco, Samuel A. Cohner, quien tuvo su estudio en la casa marcada con el número 62 (hoy 364), entre Habana y Compostela. A esta primera galería siguieron nuevos establecimientos, los cuales estuvieron en manos de fotógrafos alemanes, españoles, norteamericanos, franceses y cubanos. La supremacía llegó a tal punto que en 1874 existían en La Habana 15 estudios fotográficos de los cuales ocho se localizaban en O´Reilly. Entre los fotógrafos se encontraban: Lorenzo Cabrera, Samuel A. Cohner, Narciso Mestre, J.B. Fernández, Morín y López, Andrés Oca, Prado y Torner, y Esteban Mestre y Petit.
En un interesante y simpático artículo publicado por el periodista y caricaturista Conrado Walter Massaguer bajo el seudónimo de don Gual, dedicado a su amigo Emilio Roig de Leuchsering, al evocar varios pasajes de su infancia y primera juventud hace mención a un gran número de estos estudios fotográficos cuando dice:
.........“Me retraté sobre un caballito en Casa Súarez, de primera comunión en el atelier de Mestre, de “confirmación” con Cohner, en el bote en casa de Dufart y Mañan, con mis hermanos en el taller de Maceo, de bombero en casa de Gelabert y no recuerdo si patrociné a Mestre y Petit, Pumariega y Handel […]
.........Hay que apuntar que a estos primeros estudios fotográficos les sucedieron otras galerías que también gozaron de excelente reputación. Vale destacar el importante estudio de fotografía y pintura de O´Reilly 63, fundado en 1893 por el español Antonio Otero, ganador de diferentes premios en las primeras décadas del siglo xx ; la muy renombrada galería de los hermanos Maceo, en O´Reilly 75; y el estudio de Juan A. Suárez y Compañía, en O´Reilly 64 esquina a Compostela, que se anunciaba como fotógrafo de Cámara de Su Majestad el Rey Alfonso XII.

Entonces funcionaban más de 15 galerías, entre las que cabe mencionar las lujosas casas fotográficas de Payne, Cohner, Winters, Fredricks, Molina, Lacroix, Lunar y Herrera. Todas ellas se encontraban al final de las calles de Obispo y de O'Reilly, muy cerca de la plazuela de Montserrate, donde Esteban Mestre tomó una de las fotografías más noticiosas de aquella época:
............Dos días después, so pretexto de que les habían disparado desde la azotea del Hotel Inglaterra, esas huestes españolas arremetieron a tiros contra los cafés El Payret y Los Voluntarios, matando en este último al fotógrafo estadounidense Cohner porque llevaba una corbata azul, color que utilizaban como símbolo los patriotas cubanos.6 Tal asesinato causó consternación en el seno de la sociedad habanera y, como resultado del clima beligerante, sumado al cada vez mayor retraimiento económico, muchas galerías cerraron sus puertas.
