11 St Martins in the Fields, Chester
7 St Werburghs Mount, Chester

Information Librarian
Cheshire Libraries Shared Services

Thank you for your e-mail.  You are right that the church is close to Chester.  It is St Deiniol’s, the parish church of Hawarden in the county of Flintshire in north Wales; it is only 12 km west of Chester.

Although the parish is old, the church was substantially rebuilt in the 19th and early 20th centuries.  I attach a description of the church and its surroundings from Edward Hubbard, The buildings of Wales:  Clwyd (Denbighshire and Flintshire) (Penguin Books/University of Wales Press, 1986, 0-14-071052-3) [pp. 366-369].

The church and village are closely associated with the great nineteenth-century British Liberal prime minister William Ewart Gladstone (prime minister a number of times between 1868 and 1894), whose home was at Hawarden Castle, opposite the church.  He bequeathed his own library to the public, and the collection, mainly history and religion, is housed in a beautiful building close to the church which is a residential library open to the public.  Do visit it if you are in the area – it is a wonderful place!

Also close to the church is the old rectory, which houses the public record office for the county of Flintshire.  I am sure that the staff there will be pleased to help you with any more detailed enquiries about the church and its surroundings.  Their address is:  The Archivist, Flintshire County Record Office, The Old Rectory, Rectory Lane, Hawarden, GB-CH5 3NR, telephone +44-1244-532364, e-mail archives@flintshire.gov.uk ,

You might also be interested in this report on historic settlements in Flintshire:
published by the Clwyd-Powys Archaeological Trust, web: http://www.cpat.org.uk/ ,
who are the public archaeology service for north-east Wales.

And, of course, we would be pleased to help you ourselves if we can – we have a number of members in north-east Wales.
