Poco después de la conquista catalana, llegó a Palma la congregación
franciscana. Ésta, tras algunos cambios de residencia, se instaló en el
convento de San Francisco. El supuesto inicio de las obras de este
magnífico conjunto arquitectónico se sitúa en 1286. El resultado será
muestra de la gran influencia religiosa, cultural y social de esta orden
religiosa.
El aspecto exterior del edificio no es el original,
ya que la fachada gótica fue dañada por un rayo en 1580. Este
acontecimiento afectó también al interior del edificio. En 1618 se
suprimió el primer tramo de la iglesia original y se construyó una nueva
fachada. Ésta no fue terminada hasta 1700 y, junto a otras
modificaciones posteriores hasta la mitad del siglo XIX, han dado como
resultado la fachada que hoy podemos ver. Este portal presenta a las
figuras de Santo Domingo y San Francisco.
Fundada a finales del siglo xix, fue una de las principales imprentas españolas. Tenía su sede en la calle Ballesta de Madrid y era conocida por su impresión en fototipia, muy empleada en la
impresión de postales hasta principios del xx. La imprenta permaneció activa hasta 1979, año en que cerró por problemas económicos tras 90 años de vida. Por entonces imprimía revistas como Hola, Triunfo, La Calle, Sábado Gráfico, Interviú y otras
de variada difusión e influencia.
En 1897 inició su Serie general, compuesta por 690 tarjetas postales con vistas de ciudades, temas taurinos, cuadros del Museo del Prado, primeras planas de periódicos… Un anuncio aparecido en diciembre de 1902 en la revista España Cartófila, además de cifrar la producción mensual de Hauser y Menet en medio millón de tarjetas postales, indicaba las siguientes series: retratos de los reyes,vistas y monumentos de España, costumbres y tipos españoles, cuadros del Museo del Prado, Real Armería de Madrid, asuntos taurinos, Colección Company (bellezas españolas y fotografías deCompany), poesías de Campoamor ilustradas, apuntes fotográficos, dibujos artísticos de M. Peña, Don Quijote por L. García Sampedro, Alfonso XIII (diez retratos), fiestas reales, asuntos militares, Colección Sajillo, Colección Covadonga, Colección Cánovas y reproducciones de periódicos españoles.
La imprenta realizó igualmente ediciones especiales por encargo, cuya tirada mínima era de 5.000 tarjetas, e imprimió la obra de fotógrafos famosos, como la de Cánovas, con la serie ¡Quién supieraescribir!, de la cual se estamparon 200.000 tarjetas.
